American University : Engaged Scholars Fellowship Program - Cairo
Engaged Scholars Fellowship Program The project seeks to provide young promising individuals who have been engaged in Egyptian civil society with formal training through the masters’ programs relevant to their line of interest and public roles. The fellowships will support MA studies in a number of relevant disciplines. Awarded fellows are expected to have an impact on movements and organizations, which are key for enhancing civil society and democratic transition in Egypt. The Engaged Scholars fellowships applicants should demonstrate the desire and skills to serve others and should be committed to finishing the graduate program in two years. Eligibility * Egyptian nationals who are less than 40 years of age, with a proven record of prior civic engagement in social movements and civil society organizations and plans for future endeavors established through a personal statement and two letters of recommendation. * Personal statement (600 words) explaining how the MA program will be beneficial to the candidate’s future engagement in civil society and Egypt’s democratic transition and how it builds on prior experience. * Qualified applicants in the following fields of study are welcome to apply: Political science, Middle East studies, journalism and mass communication, law, sociology-anthropology and public administration. * Bachelor’s degree or graduate diploma from an accredited university with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or a rating of gayed. * No previous MA degrees earned or training received outside of Egypt. * Intermediate knowledge of English language (demonstrated through a minimum iBT TOEFL score of 45-61 and iBT writing of 14-16). Meeting the requirements of the admission in the MA program desired. The fellowship does not cover prerequisite courses. Duration Fellowships are awarded for two academic years and the intervening summer session and may cover one semester in the Intensive English Language program as needed. Award * A waiver of tuition fees, student services and activities fee * Medical services, book allowance and AUC bus transportation And, if needed for non-residents of Cairo: * Accommodation in the University residence. * The fellowship does not offer living expenses or monthly stipend. Responsibilities of Fellows * Must be committed to finish the degree by June 2014 and work in Egypt for two years following graduation. * Participants will have regular monthly individual meetings with the project coordinator to assess their progress and with scholars and policy-makers to collectively reflect on their ideas and public engagement. * Each semester the whole group of participants will have a retreat with the project advisory committee as well as selected guests to exchange experiences and discuss their work both in their respective MA and within civil society. TOEFL IBT results must be received by April 1. Selection is made early May.
